Notes/memoranda of a series of telephone conversations with FW Lawvere concerning the proposal that alternative fundamental notions are needed upon which to base the general definition of a topological space differerent from those of open set and neighbourhood. The significance in connection wth the recognition of this need of the turning point in the development of topology after circa 1940 associated with the work of Fox, Steenrod and Hurewicz. FWL’s account of some discussions with Grothendieck in the 1980s connectedwith the motives for this search and its place within a broader re-synthesis of parts of mathematics.
